pdf and ps files

does anyone know of any routines and/or scripts to extract text from
.pdf or .pd files (acrobat or postscript, that is).

crypto relavance, of course, i am trying to extract the gwbasic code from
the army crypytanalysis manual that just appeared on the web. (-:
